The differences in transmission curves for various cuvette materials not only limit the application of each type of cuvette for certain applications, but also indicate how important it is to use a cuvette of the same material (quartz with quartz; UV-Cuvette with UV-Cuvette) for the standard or “blank” used with your sample. No known plastic material has the transmissivity of quartz, and certain applications may require quartz for detection. On the other hand, plastic cuvettes work well for many applications from molecular biology to chemistry, have significant cost advantages, and their disposability eliminates washing and the risk of sample carry-over inherent in reusable cuvettes. For a variety of reasons, BRAND UV-Cuvettes are single-use items, and should not be reused.
