Summer in the Lab: Keeping Cool Under Pressure
While most people think of beaches and barbecues, life in a summer lab has its own unique sizzle. Most labs are well-sealed and temperature-controlled to protect equipment and samples—but for researchers in full PPE, things can still get uncomfortably warm. Lab coats, gloves, and goggles aren’t exactly breathable, and even short tasks can feel sweltering during peak summer days. Staying hydrated, taking regular breaks, and rotating tasks that require more intense gear can help manage the heat. Power outages are another seasonal surprise, especially during peak heat hours, so having backup systems and contingency plans in place is essential. Summer is also prime time for recalibrating and running system checks to make sure everything’s functioning properly. While the season may slow some things down, a well-prepared lab can keep pace with its research goals. It’s a season that tests your troubleshooting skills as much as your experiments, but with the right precautions (and maybe a few coffee runs), summer can still be a productive and smooth-running season in the lab.

Where Vacuum Meets Application:  A Focus on Vacuum Drying Ovens

Vacuum ovens are used in many different lab settings to initiate solvent boiling at lower temperatures to speed up the process of evaporation. To do this, a vacuum pump is hooked up to the oven to reduce pressure, which in turn protects solvents that may be damaged at higher temperatures. We can help you choose the right pump for your vacuum oven with these important considerations ...
