Revitalizing a Historic Landmark for Modern Science at Yale University
Originally opened in 1913, Yale University’s Osborn Memorial Laboratories (OML) has long been a cornerstone of environmental science education and research. Today, this historic building is undergoing a transformative renovation and expansion to meet the demands of 21st-century teaching and scientific discovery. While the character and legacy of OML remain central to the project, bringing a century-old structure up to modern laboratory standards presents a unique set of challenges—from aging infrastructure to the integration of advanced building systems required for safe, efficient research environments.
Retrofitting an existing facility of this scale requires careful coordination and innovative solutions. Legacy elements such as outdated copper piping, limited space for utilities, and evolving safety requirements—particularly around lab exhaust and biosafety—must all be addressed without compromising the building’s integrity. This is where VACUU·LAN® lab vacuum systems plays a key role.
As part of the full-building renovation, BRANDTECH is providing a comprehensive VACUULAN® laboratory vacuum system to support a diverse mix of teaching labs, research labs, field supply labs, and specialty spaces—including “dirt labs.” The system will ultimately serve 37 laboratories across the facility, ensuring consistent, reliable vacuum performance throughout.
This large-scale installation includes:
- VACUUBRAND® vacuum pumps
- More than 250 valves integrated into a fully coordinated tubing network
- A complete system design that must be installed holistically to function properly
The project, developed in collaboration with HGA Architects, began with design work in December 2024, followed by equipment shipment in September 2025 and installer training in November 2025. Unlike phased lab upgrades, this is a top-to-bottom renovation, requiring precise planning and execution across all floors simultaneously.
Currently, the team is in the tubing and rough-in phase, working through the complexities of integrating modern systems into an existing structure. Special considerations include connecting the vacuum system to lab exhaust to safely remove vapors, coordinating with ceiling service panels, and integrating with nine biosafety cabinets. With an estimated 6–8 months until finishing work begins, the project continues to move steadily toward completion.
Scheduled for completion in summer 2027, with occupancy expected in fall 2027, the renewed Osborn Memorial Laboratories will serve as a cutting-edge hub for Yale’s environmental science programs—blending historic architecture with modern functionality.
By delivering a scalable, efficient VACUULAN system, BRANDTECH is helping bridge the gap between past and future—ensuring that this iconic building is equipped to support the next generation of scientific research and education.
